On 29 March 1824 King Willem I issued a royal decree creating Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij, the earliest predecessor of todays ABN AMRO Bank, with the object of reviving trade between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies.

Around forty years later, Rotterdamsche Bank, Amsterdamsche Bank and Twentsche Bank were established. Mergers in 1964 led to the formation of Algemene Bank Nederland and Amsterdam-Rotterdam Bank- finally, in 1990, another merger was agreed and ABN AMRO Bank was born.Today, in 1999, it is clear that the objectives that were laid out then have been met and continue to be met. The original aim of stimulating international trade led to the companys success as a universal bank.

All four banks that now make up ABN AMRO Bank have consistently played a key role in financing trade as well as in the construction of Dutch industry in economic centres such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Twente. Moreover, they built up flourishing international banking businesses, based at first on the Dutch trade and capital circuits, later finding their own niches in the world of international commerce.

It reflects the typically Dutch entrepreneurial spirit and a certain thirst for adventure that characterizes corporate life in the Netherlands and has ensured its continuing growth.Because the banks were quick to expand into numerous other countries, and because they were able to diversify into commercial banking, investment banking and private banking, todays ABN AMRO Bank has a powerful presence in many different markets and has built up a reputation for integrity and high-quality, professional international services.

We are proud of the leading position that ABN AMRO Bank has built up over a period of 175 years and look with Confidence to the future.
